nudity: a symbolic condition of innocence
cleanse: wash by rinsing or flooding with water
lack of eye contact: dismissal of the viewer

Baptism is a ritualized process of cleaning the flesh. By religious law, anyone being baptized
must enter running water naked. Although the officiant could be clothed or unclothed,
the necessity of purification required that they not touch the body being baptized
as immersion in living water occurred. Nudity was foundational to the symbology
of the baptism ritual.
