Ancient philisophers found the simplest method for explaining the world was in diametrically oppositional terms. The binaries of up/down, in/out, and top/bottom are just a few examples of this elementary approach to illuminating an illiterate populace. Similar binary classifications and identifications continue to provide basic, mundane discrimination through contemporary postmodernism.
The images of binaria exxposure visually express five of these metaphorical dualities: obscured/displayed, static/kinetic, left/right, dualism/oneness, and Dom/sub. Each were selected to provoke further thoughtful contemplation, scrutiny, and musings by the curious viewer.
Written words have a history or etymology that allow for a common understanding. But consider this: the left/right binary is also sinistra/destra in Italian with left/sinistra defined as the sinister side of the body, and right/destra meaning dexterity or skilled side of the body. So, what does it mean to you, the viewer, of the first image entitled: sinistra destra?
Then, there is the significance of black/white regarding these monochromatic images. Are they really just black/white, or do they include shades of gray influencing how each image may be interpreted? Are there ideas, concepts, or even enlightenments that fit between two supposed opposites?
Maybe it is time to consider more than two options for life metaphors - black/gray/white - for coherent, credible, and compelling considerations between opposites. There's more to a story, especially a visual story, than just beginning/ending. These photographic artworks have a beginning/middle/ending. After all, just thinking of beginning/ending excludes the larger repertoire of information embodied between those binaries.
